From collapsing at the 2019 film festival to Colin Firth rushing to her side, the actress reflects on fashion mishaps, fainting spells, and unforgettable red-carpet moments
Elle Fanning is looking back with humor and honesty on one of the most talked-about moments of her early career — a dramatic fainting spell at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival that turned heads for all the wrong reasons.
In a recent interview with W, the Sentimental Value actress revealed that the unexpected collapse was caused by an overly restrictive gown. “My dress was too tight,” Fanning admitted, explaining that the incident unfolded in full view of her older sister, Dakota Fanning, who was seated across the room while attending the festival for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

“My sister was sitting at another table, and she saw my chair just completely fall back,” Fanning recalled. “It’s kind of hilarious — very dramatic.”
The moment quickly drew attention, including from an Oscar-winning bystander. “Colin Firth was there, and he rushed to my side,” she said, noting that the incident soon became “the talk of the festival.”
While startling, the episode was not entirely out of character for the actress. Fanning acknowledged that fainting has been a recurring issue in her life. “I’m known to faint,” she explained. “In school, I would faint a lot. I grew, like, seven inches in one year, and I guess my body was growing so much that I got altitude sickness.”
At the time, Fanning addressed the incident publicly with her signature self-awareness. She shared an Instagram post later that evening, writing, “Oops, had a fainting spell tonight in my 1950’s Prada prom dress but it’s all good!!” She paired the message with the hashtags #dresstootight and #timeofthemonth, quickly putting rumors to rest.

Despite the wardrobe-induced mishap, Fanning insists she has no regrets when it comes to fashion risks. “I don’t live with regrets,” she said. “That’s just not my style.” Still, she did admit to one beauty experiment she would rather forget: clip-in faux bangs. “Being a blonde, it’s hard to match the color of my hair, and it just looked like a big toupee was on the top of my head. I won’t be doing that again.”
Cannes, she noted, also brought moments of unexpected luck that balanced out the fainting scare. One party, in particular, stands out in her memory. “It was basically my prom night,” Fanning said. “I was dancing barefoot, and there was broken glass everywhere.” Miraculously, she escaped without a single cut — something her manager still marvels over.
Even high-fashion events closer to home have not been without their awkward moments. Fanning recalled a fall at the Met Gala that occurred after she spotted Cardi B across the room. “I made a fool of myself,” she said. Wearing towering shoes, she lost her balance and toppled over. “Cardi B saw this giant woman in her periphery just go down. She looked over and said, ‘Are you okay?’”
Now older and more self-assured, Fanning reflects on these moments with warmth and perspective. Whether fainting in couture or tumbling in towering heels, the actress embraces the unpredictability that comes with life in the spotlight — always with grace, humor, and an ability to laugh at herself.
