The Oscar- and Tony-winning star is prioritizing a daring West End commitment as awards season unfolds in Hollywood
Cynthia Erivo may be celebrating yet another landmark moment in her film career, but she won’t be walking the red carpet at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards this year. Despite earning a Best Actress — Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy nomination for Wicked: For Good, the acclaimed performer will be absent from the ceremony taking place on Sunday, January 11, in Los Angeles.
The reason is as ambitious as Erivo herself.
At 38, the actress is currently “deep in production” on an audacious return to the London stage, starring in a one-woman adaptation of Dracula on the West End. The production, which runs from February 4 through May 31, sees Erivo taking on an astonishing 23 roles—including the infamous Count Dracula—in a bold reinterpretation of Bram Stoker’s classic novel.

“I’m f—— petrified. I really am. I’m very scared,” Erivo admitted while discussing the project. “But I’m also really excited about it as well. It’s absolutely nonsensical and insane.”
The role marks a powerful homecoming for Erivo, who began her rise to international acclaim on the London stage. Her West End breakthrough came with the 2015 revival of The Color Purple, a performance that later transferred to Broadway and earned her a Tony Award. Since then, she has continued to balance stage and screen with remarkable ease, including standout performances in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl in August 2025 during the brief hiatus between Wicked and Wicked: For Good.
Erivo’s Golden Globe nomination this year is especially significant. With the nod, she becomes the first Black woman to be nominated twice in the Best Actress — Musical or Comedy film category, having received the same recognition last year for the first installment of Wicked. The 2026 nomination also marks her fifth Golden Globe nomination overall, adding to previous recognition for Harriet and her portrayal of Aretha Franklin in Genius: Aretha Franklin.

Wicked: For Good arrives at this year’s awards with strong momentum, earning five Golden Globe nominations—one more than the film received in 2025. In addition to Erivo’s nomination, the film is recognized for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Original Song for “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble,” and a supporting actress nomination for Ariana Grande, who stars opposite Erivo as Glinda.
Erivo’s category includes an impressive slate of fellow nominees: Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee), and Emma Stone (Bugonia). Grande, meanwhile, faces competition from Emily Blunt, Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Amy Madigan, and Teyana Taylor.
Though Erivo won’t be present to hear her name called, her absence underscores a defining trait of her career: a willingness to choose artistic challenge over ceremony. As Hollywood gathers at the Beverly Hilton, Erivo will be across the Atlantic, immersed in a fearless theatrical transformation—proving once again that her commitment to storytelling transcends awards season.
